Fire Prevention Week: Stay Safe with Lithium-Ion Batteries
From smartphones and laptops to e-bikes and toys, lithium-ion batteries power many of the devices we use every day. While convenient, these batteries can pose a serious fire risk if damaged, misused, or charged improperly.
This week, Fire Services is encouraging everyone to take a few simple steps to reduce that risk and help keep your home and family safe:
BUY Safely: Purchase electronics and batteries only from reputable retailers. Make sure they are certified by a recognized testing agency.
CHARGE Safely: Always use the charger that came with your device. Charge on a hard, flat surface—never on a bed or couch—and unplug once the device is fully charged.
RECYCLE Safely: Never throw lithium-ion batteries in the trash. They can cause fires in garbage trucks and recycling facilities. Take them to a designated battery drop-off location for safe disposal.
Fire Prevention Week is the perfect time to review your home’s fire safety practices and make small changes that can make a big difference.
