The Township of South Algonquin

District of Nipissing

Welcome to South Algonquin

South Algonquin is located adjacent to the south-east corner of Algonquin Provincial Park and offers you an abundance of four-season wilderness experiences with our numerous lakes, rivers, streams and thousands of acres of crown land — here for you to explore.

Our area is well known for its hundreds of kilometers of recreational trails, offering snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, and dogsledding during the winter months. Throughout the other seasons, South Algonquin offers hiking, ATVing, canoeing, kayaking, whitewater rafting, camping, hunting and fishing.

The fishing is great all year round, especially trout fishing. We have excellent small and large mouth bass fishing during their open season. Walleye and pike, having been introduced to the area more than twenty years ago, offer large trophies for the fishing enthusiast.

Rapid Lake Trestle Bridge Closure

Update as of August 16, 2024

The Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) has issued a work permit to Opeongo Snowbirds Snowmobile Club to repair the Rapid Lake Trestle Bridge.

During this time, there will be active construction crews working to repair the bridge.

Your patience is appreciated.

On the evening of August 8, 2024, Rapid Lake Trestle Bridge (circled in red on the below map) located in Whitney caught fire.
The South Algonquin Fire Department was able to extinguish the fire, but the bridge has sustained structural damage.
The trail/road leading to the bridge has been temporarily closed to the public. Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry (MNRF) staff are currently working to install signage and barriers to close off travel at this location.
This trail/road is located north of Hwy 60, north of Whitney, Ontario, and is accessed from Nipissing Road allowing into the Rapid Lake system. The bridge is situated at a water crossing called “Rapid Lake Trestle Bridge”.
This situation is ongoing, and we will provide you with updates as we get more information from MNRF.
